Amniotic cell culture during different ages of gestation for karyotype analysis in bovine Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
EIRAS,Paola Ribeiro Seabra; BARRETO FILHO,João Bosco; GOLGHER,Romain Rolland; SANTOS,Sandra Regina Quintino dos.
Bovine karyotyping has become an important diagnostic tool in animal breeding. In the prenatal period it can diagnose several chromosomal abnormalities such as Robertsonian translocations, testicle feminization syndrome, gonadal dysgenesis and Klinefelter’s syndrome. An important cell source for karyotype analysis is the amniotic fluid. It has been extensively used in humans but in bovine, however, this is not the case despite its diagnostic value. Since a small percentage of cells is viable, cells and their growth conditions as well as the handling of the material should be optimal to insure a successful analysis. For this, we have compared the growth efficiency for bovine amniocytes in two media, employing cells from 10 to 14 weeks of gestation....

An Economic Performance Analysis of the Beef Cow-herd Enterprise Using a Stochastic Frontier Function AgEcon
Cho, Jaesung; Park, Seong Cheol; Bevers, Stanley J..
Standardized Performance Analysis (SPA) data from Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico were used to examine the economic performance of beef cow herd operations in the Southern Plains region by measuring their technical efficiency index. Factors that make significant impacts on the production are herd size, machinery investment per breeding cow, and rainfall. Little technical inefficiency among the Southern beef cattle operations that participated in the SPA data was found.

An outbreak of winter dysentery caused by bovine coronavirus in a high-production dairy cattle herd from a tropical country BABT
Takiuchi,Elisabete; Barry,Aline Fernandes; Alfieri,Alice Fernandes; Filippsen,Patrícia; Alfieri,Amauri Alcindo.
Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) is a known cause of winter dysentery (WD) in adult cattle. The morbidity of the disease is high, that results in a significant decrease in milk production and consequently, economic losses. In the present study, we report on a classical outbreak of WD that affected a high-production Holstein dairy herd raised in a tropical country. The lactating batch included 154 cows, and 138 (90%) presented diarrhea in a short (nine days) period of time. Three (2%) cows died. The other batches of animals did not become ill. The evolution of the disease in the herd, including the clinical signs and epidemiological features, strongly suggested a WD case. Semi-nested PCR and RFLP confirmed that BCoV was the cause of the infection. Samples tested...

Analysis of tRNA halves (tsRNAs) in serum from cattle challenged with bovine viral diarrhea virus Genet. Mol. Biol.
Taxis,Tasia M.; Bauermann,Fernando V.; Ridpath,Julia F.; Casas,Eduardo.
Abstract Acute infections of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) lead to a range of clinical presentations. Laboratory tests for detection depend on collection of samples during a short viremia. Acutely infected animals remain largely undiagnosed. Transfer RNA halves (tsRNAs) are hypothesized to function like microRNAs to regulate gene expression during an immune response. The objective of this study was to identify tsRNAs in cattle that had been challenged with a non-cytopathic field strain of BVDV. Colostrum-deprived neonatal Holstein calves were either challenged with BVDV (n=5) or mock challenged (n=4). Sera was collected prior to challenge and days 4, 9, and 16 post challenge. RNA was extracted and read counts of small non-coding RNAs were assessed...

ANNUAL VARIATIONS OF THE SODIUM CHANNEL BLOCKING TOXIN IN VENEZUELAN CATTLE PRONE TO DEVELOP THE BOVINE PARAPLEGIC SYNDROME: ITS DEPENDENCE ON RAIN J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
SEVCIK,C.; D'SUZE,G..
A characteristic of the bovine paraplegic syndrome (BPS) is ventral or sternal decubitus in animals that make unsuccessful efforts to stand when stimulated. Death occurs after a few days. In a previous work we showed the existence of a sodium channel blocking toxin (SCBT) produced by ruminal bacteria in cattle with or liable to develop BPS. The presence of SCBT in bovine plasma sampled monthly during the rainy and dry seasons in animals without BPS has now been observed. A positive correlation between rain precipitation and plasma toxin levels (Spearman's rank correlation coefficient=0.457, n=135, p&lt;10<img SRC="http:/img/fbpe/jvat/v4n1/image522.gif"> ) was found. Precipitation was 194 (121-289) mm water/month (n= 162 months in 27 years, median...

Antiviral activity of bovine uterus and placenta induced by Newcastle disease virus Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Barreto Filho,J.B.; Marques Júnior,A.P.; Golgher,R.R.; Lopes,E.; Carvalho,P.H.A.; Rossi,R.O.D.S..
The antiviral activity profile of the uterus and fetal membranes from bovine placenta, induced by the Newcastle disease virus (NDV) throughout gestation, was investigated. Explants of the endometrium and caruncles were collected from the uterus, and amniochorion, allantochorion and cotyledons, from fetal placenta. Tissue cultures were induced with ~6.0 hemagglutinating units (HU) of NDV. Supernatants were concentrated 20 fold, filtered in 100kDa cut-off membranes and antiviral activity was titrated in MDBK x VSV system. Tissues of the uterus did not exhibit antiviral activity, while allantochorion and amniochorion produced antiviral factors throughout gestation. Antiviral factors were not related with IFN-alpha, gamma, tau or TNF-alpha. The antiviral...

Application of the first canonical variable in the evaluation of animal production trials R. Bras. Zootec.
Detmann,Edenio; Cecon,Paulo Roberto; Andreotti,Marcelo de Oliveira; Resende,Flávio Dutra de; Sousa,Daniel de Paula; Ponciano,Niraldo José; Campos,José Maurício de Souza; Souza,Paulo Marcelo de; Vittori,Andrea.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the inter treatment discrimination according to feed conversion efficiency in several animal performance experiments. The variables investigated were: feed conversion ratio (FCR = intake: production ratio), feed efficiency index (FEI = production: intake ratio) and bio-nutritional index (BNI). The BNI was constructed from the first canonical variable obtained based on the multivariate analysis of variance of the intake and animal production (weight gain or milk production) variables. The results indicated that FCR and FEI reciprocated each other at experimental plot level but did not reciprocate at animal group or treatment level. This fact implicates distortions on the descriptive levels of probability of type I...

Assessing land use by cattle in heterogeneous environments Ciência Rural
Sant'Anna,Aline Cristina; Costa,Mateus José Rodrigues Paranhos da; Páscoa,Adriano Gomes; Silva,Lívia Carolina Magalhães; Jung,Jens.
The aim of this note is to describe preliminary results on assessment of land use by cattle, obtained in a pilot study using Geographic Information System (GIS). The research was carried out on a semi-natural pasture in Sweden, where the geographic positions of one cow were recorded during 25 consecutive days during summer. The cow, wearing a GPS collar, was integrated in a herd of 53 Hereford cattle. Each location point registered for the animal was considered as a sampling unit (N=3,097). The spatial distribution of ground declivity, water sources, cattle tracks, and classes of woody vegetation cover (forest, grassland with trees and open grassland) were recorded. The storage, processing and data analysis were carried out using the Idrisi and GS+...

Association between handling stress in the corral and rabies antibody titers in selenium-supplemented cattle J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Reis,LSLS; Chiacchio,SB; Oba,E; Pardo,PE; Frazatti-Gallina,NM.
This study determined the correlation between serum cortisol levels and rabies antibody titers in cattle primo-vaccinated against rabies and supplemented with dietary selenium (Se). Sixty Nelore male calves (10 to 12 months old) received daily and individual dietary supplementation with 0, 3.6, 5.4 and 6.4 mg Se (groups Gc, G3.6, G5.4 and G6.4, respectively). The animals were vaccinated against rabies (day 0) and subjected to handling stress in the corral for 120 days. Blood sampling procedures were performed on days 0, 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120. Cortisol levels increased until day 90, but had dropped significantly by day 120 (P < 0.01). Rabies antibody titers on days 30 and 90 were similar among Se-supplemented groups; in the control group, rabies...

Association of the bovine major histocompatibility complex (BoLA) BoLA-DRB3 gene with fat and protein production and somatic cell score in Brazilian Gyr dairy cattle (Bos indicus) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Nascimento,Carlos Souza do; Machado,Marco Antonio; Martinez,Mario Luiz; Silva,Marcos Vinícius G. Barbosa da; Guimarães,Marta Fonseca Martins; Campos,Ana Lúcia; Azevedo,Ana Luisa Sousa; Teodoro,Roberto Luiz; Verneque,Rui da Silva; Guimarães,Simone Eliza Facioni; Oliveira,Denise Aparecida Andrade.
The effect of the bovine major histocompatibility complex (BoLA) locus on animal health may be due to a direct action of its alleles on immune functions, whereas its indirect effect on production traits might be explained by the better general health conditions of more productive animals. In the present study, the BoLA-DRB3 gene was investigated in 1058 cows belonging to seven Brazilian Gyr Dairy herds (Bos indicus, Zebu cattle). A total of 37 alleles were identified, 15 of them described for the first time in a Zebu breed. A highly significant association (p < 0.02) was observed between allele *54 and a decrease (-26.1 kg) in milk protein yield and there was a significant association (p < 0.05) between this allele and lower (-26.07 kg) milk fat...

Attributes Preferred and Premiums Offered for Naturally Produced Beef Cattle AgEcon
Springer, Job D.; Biermacher, Jon T.; Childs, M. Dan; Alkire, Deke O.; Grooms, Brandon.
A growing number of beef cattle producers in the US are using limited information to determine whether or not it would be economical for them to grow naturally produced cattle. The objective was to discover the attributes that marketing companies prefer for the naturally produced cattle they purchase, and to elicit the price premiums being offered for cattle that possess these attributes. Results of a phone survey of companies that purchase natural cattle show that 27 out of 32 companies report their willingness to pay a premium of $5.95/cwt for cattle that have never received antibiotics, ionophores, hormones or animal by-products.
